What is a wide brim sun hat?

A wide brim sun hat is anything with a brim of three inches or more running the full way around. That measurement is not arbitrary: at three inches the brim shades the nose, ears, and neck at the same time, which is what dermatologists point to when they distinguish a sun hat from a cap.

Who needs one

  • Gardeners — hours in direct overhead sun.
  • Beach and poolside — shade for face, ears, and shoulders.
  • Outdoor volunteers and mission teams — full days of exposure.
  • Anyone with sun sensitivity — after treatment or on photosensitizing medication.
  • Hikers and walkers — shade that a cap does not provide at the neck.

Brim, fabric, and rating

A UPF rating is a fabric measurement, not a brim measurement. UPF 50+ means the fabric blocks 98 percent of UV; the brim width decides how much of you sits behind that fabric.

  • 3in to 4.5in brim — full circle, downward slope.
  • UPF 50+ fabric — blocks 98 percent of UV.
  • Straw, canvas, or packable poly. — undefined
  • Chin cord — on windy-weather styles.
  • Sizes S/M and L/XL — with an internal adjustment band.

Care and packing

Packable poly styles roll into a bag and recover. Straw does not; it creases permanently and should travel on your head or in a box. Reshape any damp brim before it dries. 10% of every purchase is donated to a Christian ministry, mission, charity or non-profit. You are helping the Kingdom of Heaven with every purchase.

Sun hat questions, answered

How wide should a sun hat brim be?

Three inches minimum for real protection, which shades nose, ears, and neck together. Wider is better if the hat is worn for full days outdoors.

What does UPF 50+ mean?

The fabric blocks 98 percent of UV radiation. It rates the material, not the coverage, so brim width still determines how much of you is shaded.

Straw or fabric?

Straw breathes best and looks traditional but will not pack. Canvas and packable poly roll into a bag and recover.

Will it blow off in wind?

Wide brims catch wind. Choose a style with a chin cord for the beach, a boat, or an open field.

What size should I order?

S/M fits up to about 22.5 inches, L/XL up to about 24, and both have an internal band for fine adjustment.

Can I pack a straw sun hat?

No. Straw creases permanently. Packable poly styles are the ones made for travel.

The give-back

Every hat sends a kid to summer camp.
