What is a bucket hat?

A bucket hat is a soft downward-sloping brim that runs the full way around the head. That full circle is the practical difference from a cap: it shades ears and the back of the neck, which is why it is the hat of choice for fishing, festivals, camps, and long days outdoors.

Fabric, brim, and fit

The fabric determines what the hat is actually for. Cotton twill is the everyday version. Nylon dries in minutes and is the one to take on the water.

  • 2in to 2.75in brim — a full downward slope.
  • Sizes S/M and L/XL — a fitted rather than adjustable style.
  • Embroidered brim or crown — small designs; the shape does not take large ones.

Care and packing

Machine wash cold on the cotton styles, air dry, and reshape the brim while damp. Does a bucket hat give good sun protection?

Better than a cap. The brim runs the full circle, so ears and the back of the neck are covered, which is where most people burn.

What size should I order?

S/M fits up to about 22.5 inches, L/XL up to about 24. These are fitted, not adjustable.

Can I pack it in a bag?

Yes. It folds flat and reshapes. That is one of the main advantages over a structured cap.

Cotton or nylon?

Cotton for everyday wear. Quick-dry nylon for fishing, boating, and anywhere it will get wet.

Can I wash a bucket hat?

Cotton styles machine wash cold. Air dry and reshape the brim while it is still damp.

Why is the embroidery so small?

The sloped brim and rounded crown have no flat panel, so large designs distort. Small crown and brim placements are what hold their shape.
